evla treatment FOR VEINS

What is Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLA) Treatment?

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLA) is a minimally invasive procedure for treating varicose veins and venous insufficiency. It is a walk-in and walk-out service under local anaesthesia. Using laser energy, the affected veins are closed and sealed from within. EVLA is widely considered a safe and effective alternative to traditional vein stripping, offering benefits such as faster recovery time, minimal scarring and a lower risk of complications.  NICE rates Endovenous Laser Ablation as the Gold Standard with success rates over 98%.

BENEFITS OF ENDOVENOUS LASER ABLATION (EVLA) FOR VARICOSE VEINS

  • 98%+ Success Rate – One of the most effective and reliable treatments for varicose veins.
  • Minimally Invasive – No large incisions or extensive recovery periods.
  • Quick Recovery – Most patients resume normal activities within one to two days.
  • Highly Effective – High success rates provide long-term relief from pain, swelling, and heaviness in the legs.
  • Minimal Scarring – The targeted laser approach and ultrasound guidance reduce visible scarring, making it a cosmetically appealing solution.
  • Lower Risk of Complications – The precise treatment technique ensures safer outcomes.
  • Comfortable Procedure – Tumescent anaesthesia numbs the area, contracts the vein for better laser contact, and protects surrounding tissues.
  • NICE Gold Standard Treatment – Recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as the Gold Standard for varicose vein treatment.

HOW DOES THE ENDOVENOUS LASER PROCEDURE WORK?

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) is a minimally invasive, walk-in, walk-out procedure performed under local anaesthetic, allowing patients to return home the same day.

The treatment begins with Duplex Ultrasound mapping, ensuring precise identification of problematic veins. During the procedure, the surgeon inserts a needle into the targeted vein near the knee or ankle under ultrasound guidance. A thin wire is passed through the vein, followed by a small, flexible sheath about the size of a pen refill, carefully positioned using ultrasound imaging. Tumescent anaesthesia is then injected around the vein to:
  • Numb the area for a painless experience.
  • Compress the vein around the laser sheath for optimal treatment.
  • Protect surrounding tissues from laser heat.
Once the anaesthesia is in place, a laser fibre is inserted through the sheath and guided to the top of the vein. The laser is activated, and as the sheath and fibre are carefully withdrawn, the vein is sealed shut. Over time, the body naturally absorbs the treated vein, improving circulation and alleviating symptoms.

Is EVLA treatment suitable for all types of varicose veins?

EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation) is utilised predominantly to treat saphenous vein reflux, a common cause of varicose veins. However, it may not be appropriate for all varieties of varicose veins. The suitability of EVLA is determined by a number of factors, including the veins’ size, location, and underlying aetiology.

How many sessions of EVLA treatment are typically required?

The number of EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation) therapy sessions required depends on the severity of the varicose veins, the size and number of veins being treated, and the patient’s response to the procedure. In many cases, a single EVLA treatment is sufficient to correct saphenous vein reflux and enhance the appearance of varicose veins. However, additional treatment sessions may be required for optimal results, particularly if there are multiple veins or if the veins are unusually large or extensive.

How long does an EVLA treatment session typically take?

A typical EVLA treatment session lasts between 30 and 60 minutes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation) treatment for varicose veins typically results in a shorter recovery period than conventional surgical procedures. Individual cases may vary, but the vast majority of patients can anticipate a speedy recovery.

EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation) treatments typically result in minimal pain or discomfort. A local anaesthetic is administered to numb the treatment area and ensure patient comfort.

Pain and discomfort, bruising and tenderness, edoema and inflammation, paralysis or altered sensation, skin pigmentation, skin burns or blisters, and blood clots may be caused by EVLA.

Following EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation) treatment, the majority of patients can quickly resume their regular activities. Unlike conventional varicose vein surgery, EVLA is a minimally invasive procedure that frequently permits a quicker recovery.

EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation) treatment results for varicose veins are typically permanent, but new varicose veins can develop over time. While EVLA effectively closes off the treated vessels, the development of new veins can be affected by genetics, lifestyle choices, hormone fluctuations, and ageing.

EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation) treatment is typically not advised for expectant women. During pregnancy, the body undergoes a number of hormonal and physiological changes that may cause or exacerbate varicose veins. However, EVLA treatment is typically postponed until after pregnancy and breastfeeding have concluded.

Depending on the specific needs and characteristics of the varicose veins being treated, EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation) treatment can be coupled with other vein treatments. Combining therapy has the potential to improve results and address many aspects of venous disease.
