CYST TREATMENTS INCLUDE:

Skin Cyst Treatment In Shrewsbury, Shropshire

Cysts are a relatively common skin condition, which occur when a fluid-filled lump forms just underneath the skin. Cysts may be round in shape, and the colouration can vary from yellow to white with a dark plug-like feature. For most cysts, medical consultation is not necessarily required. In fact, some may disappear without any treatment; however, if a cyst becomes sore or infected, it would be worth having it checked by your doctor.

One of the more common types of cysts is epidermoid cysts which usually appear on the face, neck, chest shoulders and around the genital area—this is typically associated teenagers with acne. Pilar cysts are also found quite often and typically develop around hair follicles on the scalp. All in all, while cysts are quite common and typically benign, it would still be wise to seek professional medical advice if they cause discomfort or pain.

HOW ARE SKIN CYSTS TREATED?

Cysts are generally harmless and can be left undisturbed if they don’t cause any further issues. The urge to pop a cyst should be avoided as it can spread the infection and could potentially grow back. Treatment for a skin cyst usually varies depending on its size, location and the symptoms it causes. Inflamed cysts such as acne cysts typically respond quickly to cortisone injections, reducing inflammation within 24-48 hours.

Larger cysts may need to be removed surgically with different techniques available depending on the case. If recurrent cysts present themselves, then oral retinoic acid may be used as part of a long-term treatment plan. Our Specialist Dermatologists can provide tailored advice when treating skin cysts, helping ensure the best outcome for their patients.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Cysts are generally not a major medical concern, but they may swell up causing disfigurement, pain and every so often discharge their contents. Occasionally they can burst giving rise to sunken scars and scalp cysts can cause hair loss in the area in from which the cyst arises.

Skin cysts are very rarely dangerous, however, there are other types of cysts which can be a cause for concern.

These include Ovarian cysts and pilonidal cysts. Ovarian cysts can occur naturally or can be a sign of a hormonal imbalance, whilst pilonidal cysts are found near the tailbone and usually develop due to trapped hairs. Furthermore, some deeper internal organ cysts may also indicate underlying medical conditions, so it is important to stay vigilant and aware of any changes in the body.

If you have an infected cyst, you may be offered antibiotics. A consultant dermatologist is also able to remove the cyst by cutting the skin and draining the fluid under a local anaesthetic.
