Age Spots And Sun Damage Treatments IN SHREWSBURY

Spending time outdoors without sun protection puts your skin at risk from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. These can add years to your looks. Fortunately, there are ways to erase some of this damage.

If you use tanning beds, you’ll notice these changes quickly, often in a few years. Some people who use tanning beds see signs within a year or even sooner.

As the damage builds, you may see deep lines or dry, scaly patches called actinic keratoses (AKs). An AK is a precancerous skin growth and sun damage can also lead to skin cancer. And sometimes an AK turns into a type of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. Find out the skin cancer treatments we offer here.

While much of the damage is permanent, treatment can reduce some signs of sun damage that are making you look older.

Sun damage including redness, pigmentation and wrinkles can respond well to laser treatment for age spots and at St Michael’s Clinic we use either intense pulsed light photorejuvenation or more targeted treatment with the Cynergy pulsed dye laser, the Trivantage laser or the Encore CO2 laser.

Assessment and diagnosis by our skin specialists will allow the right treatment choice to be made to get the best results for you as an individual.

What are the symptoms of Age Spots?

Age spots are very common after middle age, but if younger people spend a lot of time in the sun they can get them too. They range in colour, from light brown to black. The texture of age spots is no different from that of your skin, and appear more often on sun-exposed areas. They do not cause any pain or discomfort. Age spots are most common in those who:

  • Are older than 40
  • Have fair skin
  • Have a history of frequent sun exposure
  • Have a history of frequent tanning bed use

How can Age Spots be treated?

At St Michael’s Clinic, we offer laser and IPL treatments to help treat and reduce unsightly age spots. Both treatments can provide visible results after a single session, with the option of continuing a course of several sessions for IPL treatment. These advanced technologies effectively target sun damage, pigmentation, freckles and melasma. Liver spots, age spots, benign lentigos and freckles are typically treated in one laser session lasting 15-30 minutes with minimal discomfort indicative of a warm rubber band flicking against the skin. If desired, IPL treatment may then be repeated every 4 weeks over the span of 2-4 sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A laser is a high energy beam of light that can precisely transfer this energy into certain tissues within the skin. The process of directing a laser or IPL source to a target area in the skin is technically known as “selective photothermolysis”. The appropriate use of either lasers or IPL will be assessed at the consultation.

The appropriate use of either lasers or IPL will be assessed at the consultation.

Laser treatments are usually scheduled at 6-week intervals, but often just one session is sufficient, depending on your individual response. IPL treatments may be repeated every 3-4 weeks for a course of 4 sessions.
